Mr. Web Review: ABC DOES ANOTHER HATCHET JOB
ON PORN
ABC News did a
recent special on the adult industry where they
followed adult star
Belladonna for more than 24 months to get an
inside look at the industry. I'm more convinced than
ever now that there are some porn connoisseurs at
PBS and ABC, because how else would these networks
know exactly which girls to follow around all the
time?
They always seem to pick the girl
who is working for the most extreme studios and
producers to write their tales about. The industry
is rife with tales of rough sex, drugs and women
being used up. But that is true in the mainstream
celebrity world, too, only the using up comes off
screen.
Look at the headlines we see every
day. Diana Ross going to visit Richard Pryor for
drug counsel and then is arrested for drunk driving.
Britney Spears sucking ciggies -- and Lord knows
what else -- like Michael Jordan drinking Gatorade.
And don't get me started on little innocent
Winona Ryder.
These are money businesses and the girls who get
into them, mainstream or adult, are looking for
money and fame. Honestly, there are too many 18 year
olds who get into adult and don't know the ropes and
get talked into things, as Bella did, that they are
not comfortable with.
And there is an audience for the
type choking movies and brutal gang bangs that she
has filmed. Personally, I don't have a taste for
them and we've adopted a semi-policy to not review
those films here. We have done so in the past but
with much consternation.
But back to ABC. The network runs a porn special
during sweeps and gets a record 12 million people to
watch. Why? Porn sells. They know it. So they make
it as spectacular as they can and as much of a
spectacle as they can. They did explore how so many
mainstream companies make big money off adult, but
like PBS, it seems ABC is only after the shock value
of adult.
There are many companies, which the
network too lightly glosses over, that make what are
basically Hollywood B movies with hardcore sex.
There are many gonzo companies which only film
scenes that most people would love to have in their
private lives.
There are many girls, like
Jenna Jameson and
Sinnamon and
Jill Kelly, who are making a good smart living
in adult. I'd love to see some of them featured next
time.
One thing I will say needs to change
is how we the viewer looks at condoms. Guys write me
that they won't buy a porno that our review says
uses condoms. I always ask how does that ruin the
experience for you? I understand how condoms can
take away some sensation but I'm guessing most of
you un-hitched guys aren't going barebacking with
every girl you meet at the Steelers game.
Why would you want your pornstars,
too. Bella got Chlamydia, so did
BiSexual Britni. We want to
enjoy our pornstars, I think, not watch them get
sick. I would also
urge you to write to ABC and PBS to give them an
alternate view of the material we all enjoy.
I think a lot of Americans are
getting a view of adult that is plain and simple,
just too narrow.
